South Ural State University is a university with interesting history and diverse traditions, this is a multidisciplinary educational institution that is famous for its scientific achievements, high educational preparation level, fundamental and academic basis, material and technical facility for the purposes of research activities and educational process.
The history of the University is a series of successive stages of dynamic development. From an institute consisting only of two faculties, it has become a national research university, a scientific and educational center not only of the South Ural region but also of the country.
• On November 2, 1943, the Chelyabinsk Mechanical and Engineering Institute (ChMEI) was established. Initially, there were only two faculties: Mechanics and Technology, and Armored Fighting Vehicles.
• On June 23, 1950, ChMEI was reorganized as Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute (ChPI). In 1952 ChPI had strong business and scientific contacts with the leading industrial enterprises of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions.
• In 1955, creation of a sports club, sports palace, hockey pitch, and athletics arena.
• December 6, 1956 – the first issue of the student’s newspaper was published.
• December 31, 1956 – the Institute Radio Station went on air.
• In 1957, the Mechanics and Instrumentation Engineering faculties were opened.
• In 1962, the Assembly hall for 1100 seats was opened.
• In 1974, the Student’s Research Center was built.
• April 1, 1963 – the Institute’s Student Theatre was organized.
• In 1975, the Interuniversity Computer Center was formed.
• In 1979 the Institute has one fundamental research laboratory (New Manufacturing Methods of Rolling), and 12 industry laboratories.
• October 31, 1990 - the ChPI was renamed as the Chelyabinsk State Technical University (CSTU).
• In November 18, 1997, ChSTU was renamed as the South Ural State University.
• In 2001, SUSU Radio and Television Center was opened.
• In 1999, the University opened an independent structural unit, the Art Center.
• Development of international education at the University began with the opening of the Open University Business School of Great Britain at the International Faculty. In 2010, Institute for International Education was established.
• For 37 years, the Scientific Production Institute "Educational Equipment and Technology" has been operating at SUSU. During this time, the Institute has become a leader in the development, production and supply of high-tech educational equipment.
• In 2007, SUSU was involved in the implementation of the nation-wide project "Education". Two years later the University received a federal grant for the implementation of the innovative educational program "Energy and Resource-Saving Technologies".
• In April 2010, SUSU became one of 15 universities in Russia, which were awarded the status of "National Research University".
New research and educational centers and laboratories were established:
- REC "Composite Materials and Structures"
- SEC "Experimental Mechanics"
- Laboratory of Physical Modeling of Thermomechanical Processes.
An important milestone in the modern history of the University is the execution of a triple agreement between SUSU, the Russian company for measurement equipment production "Metran" and the American company "Emerson".
South Ural State University is in the Top 15 best classical universities in terms of demand among Russian universities.
The University has 20 research and educational centers, 7 institutes, 3 centers for collective use, and 12 international laboratories. 46 small innovative enterprises operate with the participation of the University.
The University is ranked among the best universities in the world, and every year improves its position among them: QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) – 801-1000, THE (Times Higher Education) - 1001+, "Three missions of the University" – 901-1000.
SUSU implements 176 Bachelor's degree programs, 144 Master's degree programs, 24 specialty programs, and 26 graduate programs. 4 Bachelor's and 21 Master's degree programs are available in English.
Since September 2018, SUSU has introduced project-based education in both elite Bachelor's and Master's degree groups.
The customers of the projects are the numerous partners of the University – Emerson, SMS Group, Siemens, Samsung, «Kaspersky Lab», «Sberbank», Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, KAMAZ, ROSCOSMOS State Corporation, ROSATOM State Corporation, and many others. In the process of learning the projects are prepared by the teams of students of different fields and levels of training – economists, designers, programmers, engineers, and marketers.
More than 2300 foreign students from 58 countries study at SUSU. The campus has 8 hostels, a canteen, a hairdresser, a grocery store, a computer club, cafes, and a park.
Today SUSU is a platform of innovative developments, a starting point for modern youth, for a generation of ambitious and self-confident people, their challenging ideas, and projects. It is a universal University:
