The Scientist of the Year International Competition follows a structured, transparent, and merit-based process designed to ensure fairness, integrity, and international credibility. The Competition operates within an annual framework while accepting applications on an ongoing basis.
Online Application
Applicants submit their nomination through the official online application form. The application requires:
- A concise professional biography
- Information on past and recent scientific, professional, or leadership achievements
- A professional portrait photograph and, where relevant, thematic images illustrating research, innovation, or professional activity
Applicants may attach supporting materials that substantiate their achievements and qualifications. These may include, but are not limited to, letters of professional support, evidence of membership in scientific or professional societies, conference leadership roles, patents, licenses, certificates, publication lists, honors, awards, and relevant links to supplementary materials. All materials must be submitted in English.
Applicants are advised to prepare all materials in advance. Once the application process has been initiated, it cannot be saved and resumed at a later time. If supporting documentation is not available at the time of submission, it may be provided subsequently in accordance with the application instructions.
By submitting an application, candidates confirm that the information provided is accurate. For selected Winners, publication of a Winner Profile and related materials is subject to the applicable Privacy and Publication policies of the International Achievements Research Center.
Preliminary Review and Approval
All submitted applications undergo an initial screening by the IARC Review Committee. This review confirms eligibility, completeness, disciplinary relevance, and alignment with the scope of the Competition.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants are formally notified by email once their application has been approved for further evaluation or declined at this stage.
Administrative Fee and Sponsorship
Participation in the Competition is free of charge at the application stage. An administrative fee applies only after an application has successfully passed the preliminary review and has been formally approved for evaluation.
Upon approval, applicants receive an official confirmation and an invoice. Subsequent stages of the Competition process commence only after the administrative fee has been received. The administrative fee is non-refundable.
Payment of the administrative fee does not influence the evaluation or outcomes and is not a criterion in judging.
The administrative fee may be paid by the nominee directly or covered by a sponsoring institution, employer, or funding organization.
The administrative fee supports the administration and governance of the Competition, including:
- Operation of the Review Committee and Judging Committee
- Evaluation coordination and program administration
- Publication of official Competition results
- Maintenance of Competition communication channels
Recognition deliverables are conferred only upon candidates selected as Winners.
A portion of each administrative fee contributes to broader initiatives supporting science, technology, education, and the public recognition of scientific achievement.
Evaluation and Judging
Following approval and confirmation, applications are submitted to the IARC Judging Committee for evaluation.
Evaluations are conducted holistically, with due regard to the applicant’s discipline, professional role, and career stage. Judges consider the quality, significance, and integrity of the candidate’s contributions, as well as the clarity and completeness of the submitted record. The criteria below describe the principal areas of assessment and are applied as appropriate to each nomination.
General Evaluation Principles
- Assessment is based on the information and supporting materials provided in the application and any eligible supplementary documentation submitted in accordance with the Competition rules.
- Contributions are evaluated in context, recognizing disciplinary norms, research environments, and legitimate differences in publication, innovation, and leadership pathways.
- No single indicator (such as publication count, patent volume, or position held) is determinative.
- The Judging Committee assesses applications based on materials available by the applicable evaluation cut-off communicated to the applicant; materials submitted after this point or that cannot be verified may not be considered.
Following a comprehensive review, the IARC Judging Committee determines the recipients of the Competition’s recognitions. Decisions of the Judging Committee regarding outcomes are final. Administrative queries related to eligibility or submission completeness may be addressed through the Competition Secretariat.
Forms of Recognition
The Competition confers recognition for both scientific achievement and leadership contributions that advance science and education.
Scientific Recognition
Scientific recognitions (including distinctions such as Scientific Laureate) may be assessed against criteria that include:
- Originality and significance of scientific or technological contributions
- Rigor of the work and the soundness of methods, evidence, or technical execution
- Impact on the advancement of knowledge, practice, or enabling technologies within the relevant field
- Quality and influence of research outputs (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, patents, validated innovations), as applicable
- Evidence of sustained contribution, including mentorship, collaboration, or capacity-building activities where relevant
Scientific recognition acknowledges merit and contribution, rather than position, seniority, or institutional affiliation.
Honorary and Leadership Recognition
Honorary recognitions for academic or scientific leadership (including distinctions such as Honorary Scientific Advisor or Honorary Academic Advisor) may be assessed against criteria that include:
- Leadership and governance contributions that strengthen research, education, or scientific institutions
- Strategic influence on scientific development, research ecosystems, or academic advancement
- Contribution to capacity-building, mentorship structures, institutional development, or international cooperation
- Demonstrated record of integrity, stewardship, and service aligned with the advancement of science and education
Honorary distinctions recognize service and stewardship rather than direct research output alone.
Outcomes for Non-Selected Contestants
Applicants who are not selected as Winners are formally informed of the Competition outcome through a personalized notification acknowledging their participation.
Non-selected contestants receive structured, high-level feedback outlining key areas for improvement and alignment with the Competition’s evaluation standards. To encourage continued engagement, eligible contestants may revise and resubmit their application within the same Competition year under a different Category, without additional charges, or participate again in a subsequent edition.
All contestants who completed the evaluation process but were not selected for the next round receive a Certificate of Participation, formally recognizing their involvement in an international competition that is reviewed through an independent assessment.
Recognition and Official Deliverables
Applicants selected as Winners receive formal recognition from the International Achievements Research Center, including:
- A Certificate of Recognition confirming Winner status
- An official Congratulatory Letter, suitable for professional and institutional use
- A dedicated Winner Profile webpage with a unique URL, presenting an official overview of the Winner’s biography, achievements, and recognition
- Permanent inclusion on the digital Hall of Fame
- The right to use the official Emblem “Scientist of the Year Winner”, in accordance with established usage guidelines
Certificates are issued electronically and may be printed. Optional postal delivery is available upon request.
Recognition Cycle
The Scientist of the Year Open International Competition operates within an annual recognition framework. While applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, evaluations are conducted on a rolling basis.
Winners and Honorees may be announced in periodic cohorts during the calendar year, following completion of the evaluation and judging process. All recognitions conferred during the year form part of the same annual Competition edition.
Recognitions are published on the International Achievements Research Center website and through its official communication channels. Applicants are notified individually once a final decision has been reached. Review timelines may vary depending on submission volume, completeness of materials, and evaluation schedules.
Confidentiality Policy
All stages of the Competition are conducted under strict confidentiality. Individual scores, comparative rankings, deliberations, and internal assessments of the Review Committee and Judging Committee are not disclosed.
Feedback provided to applicants is structured and outcome-oriented, while preserving the integrity and independence of the evaluation process.
