About Competition

In a period marked by global uncertainty and rapid transformation, recognizing scientific excellence is both timely and essential. The Scientist of the Year Open International Competition was established to honor scientists, innovators, and science leaders whose work advances knowledge, addresses complex challenges, and contributes meaningfully to society and the planet.

This prestigious international initiative recognizes significant research achievements, influential discoveries, and sustained professional contributions across a wide range of scientific and technological disciplines. While the Competition welcomes participants worldwide, it places particular emphasis on empowering scientists, engineers, and researchers from emerging and developing regions, ensuring their achievements receive the global recognition they deserve.

By creating an authoritative international platform for scientific excellence, the Competition highlights remarkable achievements that might otherwise remain underrepresented, fosters global dialogue, and reinforces science as a driving force for sustainable socio-economic development.

Purpose of the Competition

  • Support professional growth by showcasing research results, discoveries, and long-term contributions
  • Publicly recognize excellence among scientists, engineers, researchers, and science leaders with demonstrated impact
  • Promote high standards in science, technology, and academic leadership across regions and disciplines

What Distinguishes the Scientist of the Year Open International Competition

The Scientist of the Year Open International Competition is defined by the following distinguishing principles:

  • Merit-based, multi-stage evaluation Recognition is conferred following structured review, independent judging, and final deliberation, rather than automatic or single-criterion selection.
  • Recognition of both scientific contribution and leadership The Competition formally distinguishes between research achievement and leadership or stewardship contributions that advance science and education.
  • Contextual and discipline-aware assessment Contributions are evaluated within their scientific, institutional, and regional contexts, recognizing diversity of research environments and career stages.
  • Annual recognition framework with rolling evaluation Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis within a defined annual cycle, ensuring consistency while allowing timely recognition.
  • Permanent and verifiable public record Recognized individuals are documented through official profiles and Hall of Fame inclusion, providing durable, referenceable acknowledgment.
  • Clear separation between recognition and promotion The Competition emphasizes formal acknowledgment of achievement rather than commercial ranking, certification, or advertising.

Eligibility

The Scientist of the Year Open International Competition is open to scientists, engineers, researchers, innovators, and science leaders worldwide who can demonstrate notable professional or scientific contributions. Self-nominations are accepted; in addition to self-nominations, the IARC Selection Committee identifies and pre-qualifies candidates through ongoing review of academic publications, professional records, public sources, and recommendations from universities, research institutions, scientific organizations, and independent experts.

  • Active scientific contributors, such as researchers and innovators, recognized through distinctions, including Scientific Laureate and Distinguished Research Fellow
  • Academic and administrative leaders whose work has significantly contributed to the advancement, governance, or strategic development of science and education, recognized through honorary distinctions such as Honorary Scientific Advisor or Distinguished Academic Advisor

The Competition welcomes participants at all career stages, including:

  • Established and senior professionals
  • Early-career researchers and young scientists
