About Winner
Professor Dr. Georgy Fomenko is the Chair of the Board at the Institute for Sustainable Innovation. Also, he is Professor at the Yaroslavl State Technical University.
In 1980, Georgy Fomenko obtained Diploma with honors in Water Management (Yaroslavl State Technical University).
In 1992, he received PhD degree in Geography (Economic, Social, Political and Recreational Geography) at the Institute of Geography of the RAS, and defended a dissertation on "Regionalization of environmental management systems in the context of transition to the market economy".
In 2003, he defended his doctoral dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Science in Geography (Economic, Social, Political and Recreational Geography) at the Institute of Geography of the RAS, thesis on "Sociocultural methodology of environmental management".
Professor Dr. Georgy Fomenko has more than 40 years of experience in the area, including work in the field of Water Management, in local government bodies, in research, design, consulting institutions and universities.
In 2006-2010, he is a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.
In 2011, Prof. Fomenko is a national expert of the Russian Federation for the Environment for Europe process.
Professor Fomenko is an active member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Since 2017, he is a member of the Russian Professors Assembly.
Projects developed under his scientific supervision:
• Concept and roadmap of transition of Russia to green growth for the Ministry of Environment (2017);
• Methodology for constructing the System of Environmental Economic Accounts for Rosstat (2018);
• Recommendations for assessing the negative harm from emissions into the air (2017); and assessment and management of environmental risks (2017);
• Recommendations on the application of the public-private partnership in funding aimed at eliminating accumulated environmental damage (2017-2018);
• Environmental strategy for the development of the Yaroslavl region (2014-2015);
• Assessment of the economic value of the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the coal mining area (2017).
In 2020, Professor Fomenko received a commendation from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for significant achievements in the field of education and many years of conscientious work.
Recent Achievements
Since 2020, Professor Dr. Georgy Fomenko is a member of the subgroup "Conservation of biodiversity, protected areas, ecotourism, and reforestation" of the working group of the State Council of the Russian Federation on Ecology and Natural Resources, and a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the National Park “Lake Pleshcheyevo”.
Since 2010, he is a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
Among the latest unique developments of Professor Fomenko is a series of study guides "Planning and Design of Regional Development" comprised of the books: "Sustainable ecosystem design: background and approaches"; "Sustainable ecosystem design: main aspects and specific features"; "Ecosystem services in sustainable ecosystem design. Database indicators of the economic value of natural resources and ecosystem services"; "Software rapid assessment of health risk from chemical factor"; as well as the educational program "Assessment and Management of Health Risks from the Acoustic Impact of Transport" and the training course "Socio-Cultural Adjustment of Environmental Management for Sustainable Development".
In recent years, Professor Georgy Fomenko was an expert in the international projects:
• UNDP project “Developing Climate Resilience of Farming Communities in the Drought Prone Parts of Uzbekistan”;
• World Bank Project “Forest Accounts of the Kyrgyz Republic”.
National reports on environment protection of the Russian Federation in 2017 and 2018 were developed under the scientific supervision of Professor Fomenko.
