Founded in 1935, Volgograd State Medical University is the oldest university in southern Russia and among the 10 best medical universities of Russia with a long tradition of a doctors training. Professors are well-known not only in Russia but in the whole world due to their significant contribution to the development of practical and functional medicine.

Since 1962, international students study at Volgograd State Medical University. Today more than 40,000 highly qualified specialists with the VSMU diploma work in 127 countries of the world. The University now has around 2,000 students from 46 countries.

The surgeon Anatoly Konevsky was our first graduate to bring the University worldwide fame. He invented a fundamentally new neurophysiological method in the field of organ transplants.

Firstly the university was named the Stalingrad Medical Institute. The first graduation took place in 1940. During the war years, the institute functioned until August 1942. During the Battle of Stalingrad the institute's facilities, all equipment, and the library were burnt down. On October 1, 1943, the Institute was the first higher educational institution that resumed its work.

1945 - Post-war graduation. For the first time since the end of the Second World War, 92 students graduated from the university, becoming qualified doctors.

1961 - Establishment of the university in the recognizable building in the heart of the hero-city of Volgograd.

In 1998, on the basis of VSMU, the medical college was created in three specialties: stomatology orthopedics, pharmacy, nurse business is created.

2006 - Practical Medicine - three university clinics:
• Multidisciplinary,
• Dental,
• Family Medicine.

In 2012, there was opened a branch of VSMU - the Pyatigorsk Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute, so Volgograd State Medical University now has a branch in the city of Pyatigorsk.

2019 - More than 1,000 doctors graduate each year. Graduates build careers in medicine - from the European Parliament and health system leadership to clinic owners and chief physicians.

2020 - 85th anniversary of the university. Institute for Continuing Medical and Pharmaceutical Education. Digitalization of the university and implementation of personalized learning.

A highly deserved award and recognition of Volgograd State Medical University's export leadership was its victory in the All-Russian competition "Exporter of the Year 2020". VSMU has joined the consortium of 12 digital medical universities to implement the project "Digital Transformation of Medical Universities".

In recent years, VSMU scientists are creating exoskeletons. Among such developments: the first in Russia system of the passive exoskeleton of the upper limbs EXZAR-34, as well as an exoskeleton of the lower jaw which has a certificate «100 best inventions of Russia» and a multifunctional individual protection system called "Venets 34", which is designed to increase efficiency in the filtration of polluted air.

At the beginning of 2021, the E-Medical Education Center of the Volgograd State Medical University was opened. This is a unique innovative project, thanks to which it will be possible to significantly increase the competitiveness of the educational programs not only in Russian but also in the international market of educational services.

For a better student life communication atmosphere there was the LOFT co-working space opened in 2019.

In September 2020, the NGO "Regional Association of Universities" which consolidates the main exporting universities was established.

In 2021, there was the opening of the Simulation Pharmacy, the Simulation Laboratory, and accreditation of the new Specialization «Veterinary».
