Fergana State University was established in 1930 as Fergana State Pedagogical Institute. Fergana State Pedagogical Institute was considered one of the largest and most prestigious higher education institutions not only in Fergana Valley but also in Uzbekistan.
On March 1, 1991, a decision was made to establish a new higher educational institution - a university on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute in Fergana. Thus, on the eve of the declaration of independence, the first university in the valley and the fourth in the Republic - Fergana State University - was established.
Fergana State University, recognized as one of the premier higher education institutions in Uzbekistan, is dedicated to providing high-quality education across undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs. The university`s overarching mission is to foster a culture of scholarship and promote knowledge dissemination, cultivate inquiry-based learning, facilitate a smooth transition from academic rigor to practical application, and nurture a community of global-minded individuals. Adopting a student-centric philosophy, Fergana University strives to equip its students with the knowledge and skills required to achieve their academic and professional objectives. Additionally, the university is committed to serving as a catalyst for socio-economic growth in Uzbekistan, addressing environmental issues in the region, and promoting innovation in the agricultural and industrial sectors.
Over the past two years, 5 departments, 7 bachelor's degrees, and 4 master's degrees were newly established.
Fergana University seeks to achieve international recognition by attracting a diverse student and faculty body, and championing inclusivity and diversity in the region.
Currently, the university has 13 faculties, 48 departments, 60 undergraduate courses and 34 master's courses are being trained. The total number of professors and teachers is 997; 61 are doctors of science, 294 are candidates of science (Ph.D.), associate professors, and the scientific potential is 36%. The total number of students is 18,000, of which 200 are foreign students. The number of graduate students is 1538.
In the 2021-2022 academic year, a 3+1 joint educational program was organized between Fergana State University and Kazan Federal University (KFU) in the field of philology and language teaching: Russian language education. 16 students are studying within this program.
In 2023, the university established the Faculty of Agriculture in cooperation with the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE). On June 6-7, 2022, the first international Forum was held between universities.
Starting from the 2023-2024 academic year, a joint department (Uzbekistan-China Joint Department of Archeology) is being launched in cooperation with the Northwestern University of the People's Republic of China and the Archaeological Research University of Loyang.
In 2022-2023, 61 textbooks, 117 training manuals, 224 teaching-methodical instructions, and 300 monographs were published by the university's professors and teachers. 157 authorship certificates, as well as patents for 4 inventions, were obtained.
Among announced grants by Republican and foreign organizations, the university's professors won 89 projects.
Prof. Dr. Bakhodirjon Shermuhammadov, RectorStudents studying at the university have been winning international and republican science Olympiads, republican sports competitions, and essay contests named "Talented Youth of New Uzbekistan".
A university student Yoqub Odilov successfully participated in the "Tokyo-2020" Paralympics held in Japan and was awarded the «Shuhrat» medal. D. Abdulkhamidova, a student of the Faculty of Physical Culture, won a gold medal at the Central Asian Athletics Championship.
In 2022, 28 professors and 6 students were rewarded with State awards.
Student to faculty ratio is 35:1.
In 2023, Fergana State University signed memorandums of understanding with 12 foreign higher education institutions. In total, the university signed 90 memorandums and cooperation agreements with foreign higher education institutions.
In 2023, the university departments involved 50 professors and teachers from prestigious foreign higher education institutions in the framework of international programs and mutual cooperation.
In January-May, 40 professors and teachers of the university conducted training in the world's top 1000 higher education institutions.
